چکیده مقاله:
Background: Teucrium polium is a medicinal plant used as an herbal plant for antispasmodic and antimicrobial properties. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the essential oil of T. polium against fungal, bacterial strains, and Giardia lamblia. Also, chemical analysis of the essential oil of T. polium was analyzed by GC/MS. Methods: Teucrium polium was collected from the Dena mountain area during Jun 2020. The essential oil was prepared from a powder of plant. Different concentrations of essential oil were assessed by broth microdilution method against clinical fungi including Aspergillus flavus, A.niger species complex, Candida albicans, and non-albicans species. Standard and clinical bacterial isolates also were tested. Also, anti-Giardia activity of this essential oil was performed at different times and concentrations. Results: The inhibitory effect of essential oil of T. polium on Candida and Aspergillus strains was varied and dependent on species. Generally, the effect of essential oil on non -albicans species was better than C. albicans isolates. Also, essential oil had an inhibitory effect on E. coli and Klebsiella but did not affect on MRSA isolate. Its effect on Giardia isolates was also dependent on time and concentration. Chemical analysis revealed that Oxygenated monoterpenes are the major compound of T. polium. Conclusions: Teucrium polium essential oil had a considerable inhibitory effect on different strains of microorganisms. Further investigation is needed to detect the effectiveness constitute of this plant.
